Eczema and Spleen Explained by Chinese Medicine – Chinese Medicine

Posted by admin | July 19, 2010 .

Eczema is quite common among the population. Common treatments resort to moistuizers and steroids. But, traditional chinese medicine views chronic eczema (especially the dry, chronic version, not the acute weepy versions) as an internal problem with the organs. The organ of concern here is the spleen (not the actual spleen, but the spleen in TCM is basically the organ for digestion and transformation; where blood and energy is formed).

Physiological functions of the spleen

- Governing transportation and transformation

- Dominating ascending

- Controlling blood

- Dominating the muscle and four limbs

- Opening into the mouth and manifesting on the lips

Physiological/pathological explanation

Dry, itchy skin – (Governing transportation and transformation) – Spleen’s function of transforming substance into blood is diminished, leading to lack of quality blood for the body. Decrease in volume of blood leads to overall bodily dryness. Dryness leads to abominable skin hydration and defense. Although Lungs are in charge of skin, but there are no signs of lungs weakness, thus the problem resorts mainly to Spleen.

Poor concentration and memory – (Dominating ascending) – Concentration and thoughts are the mental aspects of the spleen. Since thoughts and digestion go together, too much distress in one will affect the other. In terms of dominating ascending quandary, lack of nutrient substance to the head and eyes can cause abnormal controlling of thoughts and attention.

Bloating and indigestion and loose stool or diarrhea – (Governing transportation and transformation and Stomach’s receiving and decomposing food) – The spleen’s function is again diminished, failing to properly transform the substances (food), leading to too much work for the intestines. Too much work for the intestines leads to its occupy diminished function and also of the large intestine, which will fail to properly absorb water, causing loose stool and diarrhea. The stomach’s function is also weak, failing to properly decompose the food, leading to too much work for the spleen. Weakness in one leads to weakness in other, causing overall digestion problem.

Weakness of arms and legs – (Dominating the muscles and four limbs) – The muscles are the tissue of the spleen. Terrible muscle strength means lack of nourishment from the spleen and terrible spleen strength, or spleen qi deficiency.
